The Musical Body

‘Exploring the spaces between life and music’

The Musical Body is an embodied, relational and musical practice developed by Charlotte Roberts, exploring the spaces between movement and sound, raw voice and song, individual expression and collective creation.

Through voice, movement, rhythm, improvisation and play, we explore what becomes possible when we listen, respond and create together

.

Who It’s For

Shower singers, seasoned improvisers, artists, teachers, facilitators, and anyone curious about voice, embodiment, and co-creation. No experience is required — just curiosity, openness, and a willingness to listen, move, and play.

‘The Musical Body is as interested in how we meet and listen as in what music we make’

‘Movement becomes sound.

Sound becomes rhythm, language or song.

A spontaneous moment between people can become an improvisation.

We move between structured musical forms and raw, playful exploration - listening for what wants to emerge individually and together.

The work can be musical, physical, strange, beautiful, funny, tender, rhythmic, noisy and deeply playful’

Developed & Led by Charlotte Roberts

Charlotte Roberts is a vocal artist, composer, facilitator, mentor and mother working across voice, music, movement, rhythm, improvisation and relational group process. She is the founder and developer of The Musical Body, an evolving embodied, relational and musical methodology exploring the spaces between voice, music, creativity, relationship and life, developed through her artistic and facilitation practice since 2003.

Charlotte's work explores the spaces between life and music: between raw sound and song, movement and voice, individual artistic expression and collective creation, developmental and adult vocality, structured musical form and spontaneous play.

Her practice has been shaped through long-term study and experience across multiple overlapping fields, including vocal and musical improvisation, collective vocal improvisation, embodied voice, Body-Mind Centering, Creative Voice, psychodrama and sociometry, Tamalpa Life/Art Process, developmental and somatic movement, body-work, dance therapy, experiential education, rhythm and collaborative artistic practice.

Charlotte is a certified Tamalpa Life/Art Practitioner®, TaKeTiNa Rhythm Process® facilitator, ISMETA-registered Somatic Movement Educator/Therapist and VIT-registered teacher. She has also trained and worked in Qigong facilitation and holds a Certificate IV in Music (Voice).

As an artist, Charlotte works with improvised and composed music, experimental and extended voice, movement, live and recorded sound and collaborative performance. She has released music across a number of projects and continues to develop recordings and composition alongside her facilitation and research practice.

She has facilitated body, voice, music and creative group processes nationally and internationally since 2003, and has developed The Musical Body through workshops, camps, mentoring, performances, collaborative projects and long-form immersive experiences.

Charlotte lives and works in the Macedon Ranges, on Wurundjeri and Taungurung land, where she hosts artistic exchanges and Musical Body gatherings from home and The Singing Shack. She also loves playing surdo for TaKeTiNa events, making music, following threads of curiosity with other artists, and being a mama.

Her current focus is a sustained period of artistic research and documentation: mapping the lineages and evidence beneath The Musical Body, developing and testing its scores and practices, and investigating how embodied vocal and musical improvisation can deepen artistic fluency, relationship, creativity and the ways we meet the uncertainty of life.

  • A deep, nurturing and playful space

Charlotte holds a deep, nurturing and playful space for everyone to find their voice. This isn't just about singing though, it's about innovation and creative flow. • Has been invaluable to me both personally and professionally

I have had the absolute privilege to collaborate with and be mentored by the beautiful Charlotte Roberts. As a musician, Charlotte's guidance and tailored improvisational approach has been invaluable to me both personally and professionally. I had the pleasure of observing and collaborating with Charlotte in her 'Embodying Voice' course as part of 'The Musical Body' work, where she supported the integration of my instrumental music seamlessly, providing and enjoyable, safe space for myself and her group participants. Charlotte's facilitation of vocal improvisation work is so refreshing for me as a singer/songwriter; she has enabled me to gain inspiration for songwriting/music making from the every day experience. She has a true knack for spontaneity, and drawing themes and ideas from basic concepts, and has equipped me with tools around presence, belief and healing through my music. I truly feel Charlotte's work is essential for the beginner through to the professional musician, and could be further applied in the educational, therapeutic and in diverse community settings. I would encourage anyone out there who is wanting to get in touch with their true inner creative nature to consider working with the captivating, gentle, loving, warm, quirky and fun, Charlotte Roberts! • Rich rhythms emerge, incredibly moving sound is created, hilarious moments, songs are invented, beautiful story telling

Charlotte meets us in each session with a sense of preparation rich in idea and imagery. I love her way of holding space for us, so supportive. She brings structure, ease and flexibility and is deeply responsive as we enter via the body and voice work into a thrilling space. Here anything can happen, rich rhythms emerge, incredibly moving sound is created, hilarious moments, songs are invented, beautiful story telling.... when a non singer friend of mine finally got herself to a circle singing session I'd been recommending for ages, she said "oh my god it was so much fun, playing, I loved it, I'm hooked now, why didn't you tell me ...." I said I did, I did!! We shouldn't keep this stuff to ourselves it's soooo good (Lindy)
